Ayyye so you you wanna pole
dance, huh? That’s what’s up. I have people in my life and online tell me how
cool they think it would be to take a pole class all the time. Of those people, I actually
manage to convince a few. It’s exciting and you feel a little sexy just
thinking about it, but I won’t pretend there aren’t some nerves before. A lot
of those nerves are because you don’t what to expect, and you don’t know how to
prepare. I mean, I would have loved to have had a comprehensive list of what I needed before going into, so I thought I would try and put a lil something together. (You're welcome.)
*Disclaimer: I’m keeping this list
as generic as possible so it can be applicable to nearly any studio you attend.
Every studio is different and day one at each of them will be its own
experience.*
One
The Studio's Phone Number
Yup. I’m asking you to make a phone call. This was the first
thing I did before I went to my first class. Of course checking if your
studio’s website answers your questions first is highly recommended, but I could
find nothing about the studio I started at online before I went. I had no idea
what to expect, and this was the only way for me to find out. Every studio and
owner has their own vision and approach to dance, so by calling, you can get a
more focused idea on what to expect for your class. If you’re looking for a
pole dance class, you don’t want to go somewhere that focuses on pole fitness.
If you’re looking for pole fitness, well, a pole dance class may be a touch
startling. Both are a good work out, but they have different approaches.
Calling in is a great way to get all your questions answered.
Two
Comfy Shorts
Pole is all about skin. When we're on the pole, we aren’t wearing little clothing because it’s sexy or we’re
trying to seduce someone – that’s just a bonus. Your skin is what grips the
pole and makes it possible for you to do tricks, climb, and support yourself. The
general rule is that the more skin you have exposed, the better. Using your
legs is essential in this sport and art, so spandex shorts or some other
athletic shorts are highly recommended. Your first class should be pretty
simple, so as long as your knees and maybe a few inches above are exposed,
you’re golden. The most you’ll probably do is some spins. Your thighs and
whatnot come into it later with more advanced moves and tricks. Don’t worry,
you don’t need to be all exposed on day one.
Three
A Hair Tie
I always start class with my hair
down. It makes me feel sexier and it’s nice to have it available to play with
when you’re running through a little routine. But yo, I’d be lying if I said I
didn’t get hot after multiple run-throughs though, so you always want to have a
hair tie available to pull those locks back.
Four
No Lotion
If you put on lotion before pole
or the day of, haaave fuuun. Your skin won’t be as grippy as you need and doing
moves will be more difficult than they could be. You don’t want to have a hard
time in your first class because your skin is too slippery, ya know? This is
rough for some, but I promise it is worth it! If you’re lucky, your studio may
provide some grip for you to put on your hands to give them extra stick. They
may even sell some if you want to pick up a bottle.
Five
Courage
You have this by going to your
first class in general, but it can be so scary to attempt tricks or try to be
sexy in front of strangers and people that have been at it a bit longer. Be
bold in your attempts and don’t let someone else’s experience intimidate you.
Your instructor is there to guide you, and they won’t throw anything your way
they don’t think you can handle. They may even be willing to modify tricks for
you. Own it the best you can, and don’t be afraid to play with your hair or
tease your shirt while you’re at it.
Six
An Open Mind
You are going to see many
different bodies and be asked to do some things you maybe never thought you
would do. The pole studio is a place where everyone is welcome and we all want
to see each other succeed. Be ready to explore yourself and what you’re capable
of because everyone around you is as excited about you succeeding as you
are.
